- Story Text: Tom Cruise's lastest film "Jerry Maguire" premiered in New York on Friday (December 6).
Screaming fans greeted Cruise, his wife Nicole Kidman and the cast of the film, as they arrived for the gala premiere which was held on a cruise ship.
In the film, Tom Cruise plays a hot-shot sports manager who is known as one of America's top sports agents.
Slick as a skating rink, Maguire seems to have it all but all isn't well in the world of big-money sports and Jerry's life is about to be turned upside down.
The downslide starts when Jerry realizes the inhumanity and callousness of his profession and he decides to write his thoughts on how to change it to make it more humane.
He comes up with what he calls a "mission statement",entitled "The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business." Jerry's idealistic conclusions include real caring for fewer clients, quality rather than quantity and that people and not money are what really counts.
His reward for his comments -- his agency fires him a week later.
Stripped of his job, his self-respect and a good measure of his identity, the tenacious but hanging-by-a-thread Jerry is forced to start from scratch.
He's joined on his journey to redemption by two unlikely allies -- Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr., an American footballer who is Jerry's sole remaining client; and Dorothy Boyd, played by Renee Zellweger, a 26-year-old single mother who, inspired by Jerry's "mission statement", leaves her job at the agency for a very uncertain future with her new boss.
Also in the cast are Bonnie Hunt, who plays Laurel Boyd, Dorothy's cynical but loving sister and Kelly Preston, who plays Jerry's beautiful fiancee, Avery Bishop.
Bishop is a National Football League publicist whose schedule-intensive approach to sex and relationships is matched only by her professional ambitions.
Directing the film is Cameron Crowe, a young director who has made his mark in Hollywood with such youth-oriented films as "Say Anything" and "Singles". He also wrote the script for the 1982 hit "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
The film is produced by James L. Brooks, who won the Oscar for best director for 1983's "Terms of Endearment." He also was responsible for the films "Broadcast News" and "I'll Do Anything".
Brooks is currently executive producer of the weekly animated television series "The Simpsons." Tom Cruise's credits are almost unnecessary to mention. He is one of Hollywood's most successful actors.
In little over a decade, his films have grossed more than 2.2 billion U.S. dollars. At the age of 33, no other actor can make this claim.
This is Cuba Gooding Jr's second film with Tom Cruise. The two starred together in the Oscar-nominated drama "A Few Good Men".
Gooding made his film debut as the star of John Singleton's coming-of-age drama "Boyz N the Hood" in 1991. His other credits include "Gladiator," "Judgment Night," "Lightning Jack" with Paul Hogan and "Outbreak" with Dustin Hoffman.
Renee Zellweger is a relative newcomer to the feature film business. Her roles include supporting parts in Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused," "Reality Bites," "8 Seconds," and "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Bonnie Hunt was most recently seen on the big screen opposite Robin Williams in last winter's fantasy action-adventure "Jumanji".
Kelly Preston has been seen in Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk Till Dawn," "SpaceCamp," and "Only You." "Jerry Maguire" is expected to open in the United Kindgom in late January. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
