  • Story Text: Former Take That singer-songwriter Gary Barlow has followed up his chart-topping debut solo single "Forever Love" with a second single. An album is due out on May 26th.

    Whilst Barlow penned a string of hits for Take That, the new single, "Love Won't Wait", is not his own composition but the work of another pop superstar - Madonna herself.

    "It came about in October last year," Barlow told Reuters. "I got a call from my American record company and they said I've got a song, I want to play it to you". Barlow listened to the song over the telephone, liked it instantly and agreed that he wanted to record it. Only then was the author's identity revealed.

    The album, "Open Road" embraces different musical styles ranging from acoustic tracks and ballads to uptempo numbers.

    But both his music and his future live show represent a move away from Barlow's work with Take That to a stripped-down approach where the songs hold centre stage.

    Take That were famous for their elaborate costumes, lighting and dance routines, which used to whip their young female fans into a frenzy.

    "How can I compete with a show like that," Barlow said, "I want to strip it back to the bare essentials, not to save money but to illustrate the kind of artist I am now".

    Barlow - who is only 26 years old - has already scaled the heights of a musical career that began ten years ago.

    He won a prestigious Ivor Novello award for his song "Pray" in 1994 and was dubbed "Songwriter of the Year" - an honour he shares with the likes of Elton John, George Michael and Eric Clapton.

    He has been nominated once again this year in four different categories for his song "Back for Good", which took Take That to number one in the British charts and notched up a top-ten entry in the United States.

    Take That disbanded in a blaze of publicity over a year ago after band member Robbie Williams rebelled against the group's clean-cut image and hopped on stage at an Oasis concert drinking champagne from the bottle.

    Both Williams and Mark Owen have launched their own solo careers - Williams' second single reached number two in the British charts when it came out two weeks ago.
