- Story Text: Just months after Universal Pictures released their big-budget disaster picture "Dante's Peak," another big Hollywood studio is getting ready to release its similarly-themed action film "Volcano." This one stars Tommy Lee Jones as the emergency chief for the city of Los Angeles. His challenge is to figure out what's behind a series of unexplainable geo-thermic activities under the city of Angels.
The answer is simple -- a volcano is about to explode out of the famed La Brea Tar Pits.
Anne Heche co-stars as Dr Amy Barnes, a volcano expert who's the first one to warn the city of its impending doom. Also in the cast is Don Cheadle, co-star of the Denzel Washington film "Devil in a Blue Dress." The biggest challenge facing director Mick Jackson was recreating eight city blocks along the Los Angeles mid-city corridor of Wilshire Boulevard.
This was necessary because the film called for most of the boulevard to be destroyed.
The entire recreation was built to scale at the McDonnell Douglas Aircraft plant in Torrance, California, outside Los Angeles.
One of the biggest problems during filming was the thousand of pounds of false ash, made of shredded paper, that the crew was constantly pumping into the air over the set to recreate the effects of the volcano's eruption.
Mick Jackson's first American feature film was "Chattahoochee," released in 1990. He followed that with Steve Martin and the L.A.
parody "L.A. Story." His biggest hit to date was "The Bodyguard" starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
