- Story Text: Comic actors Jeff Daniels and Michael Richards were at the Los Angeles premiere of their latest movie, the courtroom comedy "Trial and Error" on Wednesday (May 21).
In the film Daniels plays successful lawyer Charles Tuttle, a man whose future seems bright - he's just been made partner of his firm and is about to marry his boss's daughter Tiffany - played by Alexandra Wentworth.
Days before the wedding, his boss sends him out of town to handle a family legal matter. But his best friend Richard Tietti follows him, complete with a traveling bachelor party. Tietti is played by by "Seinfeld" comic Richards.
Richard is an out-of-work actor, and he refuses to let Charles's work get in the way of his well-planned party. He forces Charles to forget work for one evening and party. Unfortunately, Richard has chosen the eve of Charles's court appearance for the festivities and in the morning fails to rouse his friend from his stupor.
Recognizing the importance of his friend's imminent court appearance, Richard goes to the courthouse and pretends to be the lawyer.
When the judge denies his request for a delay and the case goes to trial, Richard must face up to the fact that he is the lawyer and most proceed with the case.
Faced with being dis-barred, Charles struggles to find a way to set things straight. But in the meantime, he's distracted by Billie - played by Charlize Theron - a beautiful waitress he met the night of the bachelor party.
She takes him away from the bedlam of the trial and through their relationship, Charles begins to question the direction of his life.
Daniels said the film highlighted how sometimes Lawyers must be very good actors in order to do their job, "We have fun in "Trial and Error", by putting a very out of work actor, maybe a bad actor, who translates into a bad lawyer and so we have a lot of fun sending up the system even more," "They're role playing all along and of course there is some substance to it, too. They have convictions and so forth. But most of the time I don't think actors would make good lawyers", Richards said.
"Trial and Error" was directed and co-produced by Jonathan Lynn, who also directed the courtroom comedy "My Cousin Vinny." His other films include "Greedy" with Michael J. Fox, "Sgt. Bilko" with Steve Martin, and "The Distinguished Gentleman" with Eddie Murphy.
In addition to his work in "Dumb and Dumber", Daniels has acted in "101 Dalmations," "Speed," and last year's hit children's film "Fly Away Home." Richards is best-known for playing the wacky character Kramer on the hit television comedy series "Seinfeld", with Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander. He has won two Emmy Awards for his work in the series.
"Trial and Error" marks Charlize Theron's third feature film.
She previously starred in the ensemble cast of the dark comedy "Two Days in the Valley," and in Tom Hanks' directorial debut "That Thing You Do." "Trial and Error" opens across the United States on May 30th. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
