  • Story Text: Summertime means music festival time. In the United States, warm weather, open-air venues and a carnival-like atmosphere are drawing concert-goers to a series of high-profile touring festivals.

    This season offers everything from rock to hip-hop, electronic to folk and everything in between.

    Lollapalooza is the returning champion of the summer festival circuit. Now in its seventh year, the travelling show was originally founded by former Porno for Pyros band member Perry Farrell. It was meant to be a showcase for younger, cutting-edge artists that might not be able to carry their own tours alone.

    This year's Lollapalooza line-up included Snoop Doggy Dog, Tricky, Tool and Prodigy. Farrell has also helped produce tie-in events like the Dioxin Peace Rally held in Washington D.C. on July 10.

    For hip-hop, rap and R & B fans, the House of Blues Smokin' Grooves Tour, now in its second year, set out to prove audiences will support a festival that features everything from the easy grooves of Erykah Badu, to the funk-driven sounds of veteran George Clinton. This tour opened outside Boston on June 30 and continued outside Washington D.C. on July 8.

    But the hottest ticket on the festival circuit this summer was the Lilith Fair.

    On the tour are 61 female musicians, including Tracy Chapman, Paula Cole, Jewel, and Suzanne Vega. It kicked off on July 5 in George, Washington and will play 29 more cities in the U.S. and Canada over the next two months.
