- Story Text: The Artist Formerly Known As Prince has announced the kick-off for his new world tour. This one, he promised, will be less "spectacle" and "more me".
The singer, who now goes by the name "The Artist", announced the tour at a New York City news conference on Tuesday (July 22).
He told reporters he wanted to do a tour "that basically featured me." The tour started in Boston on Monday and is less "flash" than his usual shows.
Some of the biggest names in pop will join him at various stops on the tour --- including Lenny Kravitz, George Clinton, Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan and No Doubt.
The Artist said locations, dates and performers to be featured at many of the concerts would be announced later in the year, in part to prevent ticket-scalping.
But a publicist for the artist said he would perform at New York's Jones Beach on July 23, in Boston on July 25 and in Philadelphia on July 26. He is scheduled to appear in the Washington D.C. area on August 1 and Atlanta on August 3.
The singer is also scheduled to perform in support of a charity led by former boxing champion Muhammad Ali on October 9, in Los Angeles.
The Artist's last album, "Emancipation", spawned the hit "Betcha By Golly Wow", a cover of the Stylistics' song.
The triple album was released in November last year and achieved double platimum status in 13 weeks.
"Emancipation" was The Artist's answer to being freed from his contract with his record company Warner Brothers -- a relationship that had seen him though his early years but had grown increasingly bitter as he became increasingly prolific.
The Artist accused Warner Bros of treating him like a slave and he would write "slave" on his cheek in lipstick for all his public appearances.
With that long-running battle now behind him, The Artist is concentrating on reviving a career that rocketed in the 1980's but had been less spectacular in recent years.
Publicists say the Artist will take his tour outside the United States later this year. The tour is expected to finish sometime in 1999, at a location he is keeping secret -- for now. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
