  • Story Text: The early eighties brought huge success for bands like "The Cure" and "Siouxsie and the Banshees" with the bands' gothic images playing almost as important a role as their music.

    "Feline", the latest EMI discovery, has incorporated influences from both bands in their debut album, "Save Your Face", released this week.

    The album is "Curesque" in flavour -- possibly because it was made with the help of record producer Dave Allen, who previously worked with "The Cure".

    Grog, the unusually-named woman who fronts the band, said she formed "Feline" after the break-up of her previous outfit "Flinch".

    She found guitarist Drew Richards in London and Ted Garcia, also a guitarist, in New York. Drummer Mig completed the line-up.

    Grog -- she insists it's her real name -- said there was no shortage of songs to produce because she writes so much material.

    "This band was formed out of the ashes of my last band 'Flinch' and I ended up with a backlog of material," she said.

    "I'm a prolific writer, or so they say. I'm constantly writing anyway so there's loads of stuff to wade through." Grog, a classically-trained pianist, said the album was compiled from a range of tracks and although loud, they are "passionate" -- not aggressive.

    "Certain songs are more angry songs but they're not all angry.

    They're not all based on anger. A lot of songs are based lyrically on negative sides of things but that's just an observation or the way I see it," she said.

    The first single to be released from the album is "Just As You Are." "Feline" plan to tour their debut album later this year.
