- Story Text: American band The Backstreet Boys are taking on their home turf with the launch of the first single from their first U.S.
album.
The group spent two years courting international audiences with their blend of pop and R&B music. Now, they're hoping to repeat their worldwide chart success at home.
The group recently appeared at a gala record launch at the Virgin Records store in Times Square in New York City.
All five band members, Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, AJ McLean, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter were on hand to celebrate the release of their album.
The first single, "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" has already hit the top ten in the U.S. music charts and has sold more than 60 thousand records since its release on June 10.
Their 1995 single "We've Got It Goin' On" barely made a blip in the U.S., but became a huge hit in Germany. It subsequently made the band a teen sensation throughout Europe.
Since then, the Boys have sold out concerts around the world, dominated international record charts, sold 11 million records and won last year's MTV Europe Viewers Choice Award, beating Oasis and the Spice Girls.
Ironically, the band's name still draws blank stares in the U.S., where the boys were born and raised.
The Florida-based band believes they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time in 1995 when alternative rock and grunge acts still ruled the American charts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
