- Story Text: - The Italian Prince of dance music, Robert Miles, has revealed his secret to success for the release of his much awaited single "Freedom", taken from his forthcoming album "23am".
Although a household name, this hugely successful D.J. is a virtually unknown face - an enigma in the current media climate.
It's a position that suits him, Miles said, and allows his music to speak for itself with no advertising overkill.
His brand new single "Freedom", was released on Monday (November 17). It features legendary soul diva Kathy Sledge.
Miles said he chose "Freedom" as the title because it worked well with the concept of his new album.
"As you can see I put my silhouette on the cover, I didn't put my face and I didn't put my image so I feel free and freedom for me is to feel comfortable with what you are doing, with what you think, with what you feel", he said.
Miles said his new album "23am" has moved on from his debut album "Dreamland", featuring the theme of freedom and live instruments combined with surprising vocal collaborations.
He insisted it is not a dance album and explained he took his inspiration from his travels over the last 18 months.
His new album "23am", is named after the time Miles' disfunctioning answerphone machine which once announced that a message had been placed at 23am.
Miles was born in 1969 in Switzerland and raised in Italy. His first taste of success came at the age of 17 when he began his DJing life as a resident at his local club.
After working in radio developing shows he decided to invest in a studio and that is when he began writing his own tracks.
Following many months living on the 'breadline', he wrote "Children" the biggest selling single in Europe of 1996, which sold a record 4.5 million disks and cost him a mere 150 U.S. dollars to make.
The name given to Miles' style of music, and one which he uses himself is 'dream house' and has been so successful, that many others have mirrored it across the world.
Dream house music emerged at the same time as "Mamme Anti Rock", a mother's movement founded to draw attention to the large numbers of young Italians dying in car crashes on the return journey home after a night in the clubs. Recent estimates for the last few years put the death toll of "strage del sabato notte" (Saturday night slaughter) at around 2,000.
The movement cited a number of causes for the untimely deaths: clubs being located outside towns, a culture of cavalier driving, all night licensing hours and ultra-fast robotic dance music which encouraged drug-taking.
Miles claims his music has progressed from the debut album "Dreamland" and is pervaded by the theme of freedom, featuring many live instruments and vocal collaborations with the likes of French chanteuse Nancy Danino and British soul diva Kathy Sledge.
The artist who is rarely seen in public, sold 13 million records in 18 months and produced the biggest selling single of 1996 in Europe. He also won a Brit Award for best newcomer in the same year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
