- Story Text: - Christopher Lambert, who rose to stardom for his role in "Highlander", is filming on location in Romania, for the film "Beowulf", which turns an Anglo-Saxon legend into a Hollywood epic.
Action is set in a "techno-mediaeval future", where, after several adventures, Beowulf battles the legendary monster, Grendel.
Lambert plays the lead role - white-haired Beowulf - "all hero and half god," according to the movie's producers.
The latest scenes are being shot on a studio lot near Bucharest and at a 13th castle in Transylvania. Filming started six weeks ago, and should wrap by Christmas.
Beowulf is produced by Larry Kasanoff ("Terminator 2"). British director Graham Baker helms a cast which includes young British actress Rhona Mitra, in the role of the headstrong, seductive heroine, Kyra.
Baker described working with Lambert as "wonderful." "He's a consumate professional to start. He knows everything to do with the cinema. He just hits the mark all the time," he said.
Lambert said the Beowulf role was tailor-made for him and that the script, which took three years to complete, was perfect.
"Larry is a firm believer that I have to play characters larger than life. And I agree with him because I really feel at home when I'm doing that because it allows me to escape, it allows me to dream, to do things I wouldn't be able to do in real life and that's why I'm acting," he said.
Mitra said she was enjoying working on the film. "The sets are incredible, the costumes are incredible, the story is such an old story. It's lovely being part of something that has such a magical feeling about it," she said.
Lambert hinted that his 1998 film projects might include "Highlander IV".
But cinema-goers anxious to see Lambert's latest action role will have to wait until next year, after special effects are added during post-production in Britain. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
