- Story Text: - Singer-songwriter Paula Cole, a solo act who once sang backup for Peter Gabriel, has dominated the Grammy Award nominations in New York.
Paula Cole was nominated for seven Grammys, covering virtually every major category of the recording industry's highest honours.
Producer-artist Babyface actually garnered the most nominations with eight, but only a few were in top categories, including album of the year and producer of the year.
The New England-bred Cole, 29, was nominated for record (single) of the year and song of the year for "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone," as well as album of the year for her second solo outing, "This Fire." She also was nominated for producer of the year, best new artist, best female pop vocal performance and best pop album.
Cole said the recognition had been a long time in coming.
"I certainly have been an opening act for a long time and touring in a van for a long time," she told Reuters Television after the nominations were announced.
"I feel very, very honoured ... but I don't even dare to expect to win," said Cole, who referred to her "Cowboys" song as a "bizarre little ditty" that served the purpose of getting her some radio air time.
Shawn Colvin was nominated for both record and song of the year, for "Sunny Came Home," along with John Leventhal in the latter category, which goes to the songwriters. The hit also earned her a nomination for best female pop vocal performance.
Other record of the year nominees were Sheryl Crow for "Everyday is a Winding Road" and the young pop trio Hanson for "Mmmbop." Other best album album nominees included Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Radiohead and Babyface.
Joining Cole in the best new artist category were Fiona Apple, Erykah Badu, Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs and Hanson. Hanson's "Mmmbop" also took a nomination for best pop performance by a duo or group.
One of the year's hottest pop acts, Britain's Spice Girls, failed to win a single nomination.
