- Story Text: Just a month after it was named the best American film of all time by the prestigious American Film Institute, Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" got a fresh theatrical screening in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 29, introduced by Welles' close friend, filmmaker Henry Jaglom.
Wednesday's screening was the start of a two week exclusive engagement at the Beverly Hills Cecchi Gori Fine Arts Theater.Several luminaries will make opening remarks throughout the course of the film's run, including Jean Picker Firstenberg, director of the American Film Institute, and Oscar-winning director Robert Wise.
Early in his extensive career, Wise served as the editor on both "Citizen Kane" and Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." "Citizen Kane" is a psychological study of a powerful media tycoon whose idealism is corrupted as he rises to enormous wealth and power.
It was produced, directed and co-written by Orson Welles, who also stars in the title role.Joseph Cotton and Agnes Moorehead also star.Originally produced and distributed by the now-defunct RKO Pictures, the film is now part of the library of classic films owned by Warner Brothers.
The epic film broke new ground in storytelling on film, introducing innovations in the use of sound, camera work and narrative technique. Its images inspired many, but they enraged the powerful publisher William Randolph Hearst, who believed the lead character in the story was a thinly desguised version of himself.
Although he attempted to prevent the release of the Picture, "Citizen Kane" did indeed find its audience and has since become one of history's best-known and most highly respected examples of filmmaking. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
