- Story Text: Not content with selling 25 millions albums in their home territory, Japanese popsters Dreams Come True have their sights set on the other side of the Pacific Ocean - the United States of America where, they say, they get the inspiration for their music.
Dreams Come True started their sold-out American debut tour in New York on Tuesday (July 29), playing to audiences who know the band from their single 'Songs of Joy', their first U.S.release.
The Far East popsters have a unique sound, featuring the compelling voice of vocalist Miwa against a tapestry of funk, jazz and soul-inspired sounds.
The band is big in Japan with album sales of 25 million and band-members can't go out in the street at home without beng mobbed by fans.
Lead singer Miwa is famous for her dynamic range and stage personality and has become an icon for young Japanese women. Her musical partner and master arranger King Masa tells the story of how he first met Miwa singing as an amateur at a small gig in Japan.Masa loved her singing and asked if she had much of her own material.'Yes' she said, '200 songs' Masa says he decided then and there he must form a band with Miwa and since then, they haven't looked back.
Dreams Come True cite their major influences as North American rhythmn and blues and soul music, mixed with a heavy dose of funk.Miwa says she heard jazz greats Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald and all the seventies' seminal funk and soul stars on the U.S.Armed Forces Network radio as she was growing up in Japan.
Inspired by the same legends, singers such as Marvin Gaye and other 1970s icons, King Masa's multi-faceted skills - as producer, composer, arranger, engineer, programmer and bassist - are the perfect complement to Miwa's musical tastes.
Dreams Come True will take their unique East meets West sound to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Washington D.C during their current tour. The tour promotes their new album 'Sing or Die' which was released in the United States on July 28. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
