- Story Text: Following in the footsteps of its highly successful remake of "William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet," 20th Century Fox is updating the Cinderella legend with "Ever After," a new film starring Drew Barrymore, who attended its World Premiere on Wednesday, July 29 in Los Angeles.
Fairy tales can come true. The legend of "Cinderella" has apparently inspired more than 500 tales of a young woman, abused by parents and siblings, who gets the guy in the end.
"Ever After" goes to the same well to tell the saga realistically, without stripping it of its magical qualities.
While the original has long been a staple of children's literature, "Ever After" is primarily aimed at the young adult audience of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo & Juliet".
The new version begins with the Brothers Grimm being summoned to the home of a wealthy dowager (Jeanne Moreau). She brings up their story of the "cinder girl" and its many prior interpretations. Then, she presents a beaded shoe and informs the writers that the true story involved her ancestor.
Told in flashback, the yarn centres on Danielle, played by Drew Barrymore, set in 16th-century France.
Danielle (Drew Barrymore) has been relegated to servant.
But fate, in the guise of Prince Henry, played by Dougray Scott takes a hand in elevating her from a life of indenture.
"Ever After" is directed by Andy Tennant, whose previous credits include "Fools Rush In," with Salma Hayek and "Friends" star Matthew Perry, and "It Takes Two," with Kirstie Alley and the Olsen twins.
This isn't his first time directing Barrymore. He previously worked with her on the television movie "The Amy Fisher Story," where she starred as the infamous "Long Island Lolita." He says with Barrymore's past no one was better suited to play Cinderella.
Courtney Cox, working in Friends and star of "Scream" says that Barrymore had the right magic to play the fairy tale role.
Barrymore herself thinks she's suited to play a Cinderella of the '90s In the movie, the bridge between old and new ideas is rather inventively provided by Leonardo da Vinci (Patrick Godfrey). The Italian inventor and artist who, in the story, has recently accepted the patronage of the French court. He's the voice of reason and of Henry's heart.
In order to recreate the story's "fairy tale" setting, the filmmakers set up camp in the Dordogne region of France. The primary locations was Hautefort Chateau, a medieval fortress which doubled as the King's palace.
Built on an impregnable elevation with steeply terraced formal gardens overlooking the serene countryside, the chateau was restored stone by stone following a devastating fire in 1968.It is now a prime tourist attraction.
