- Story Text: Three years after her novel Waiting to Exhale was turned into a hit movie, novelist Terry McMillan attended another World Premiere on Monday, August 3 in Los Angeles, this one for the film adaptation of her follow-up book, "How Stella Got Her Groove Back." The film's star Angela Bassett also joined the cast and crew at the screening.
"How Stella Got Her Groove Back" is the second collaboration for Bassett and McMillan as well as for screenwriter Ron Bass. All three worked on "Waiting to Exhale." This new story is about 40-year old Stella, a high-powered, high-salaried stock broker with a beautiful San Francisco home and a loving young son.
Her one problem is that she's lost the ability to live life to the fullest, to love, to have fun, to take chances, at least, that's what her vivacious friend, Delilah thinks.
Whoopi Goldberg takes on the role of the outrageous Delilah.
Delilah thinks she has the perfect antidote for Stella's depression -- a vacation to the golden beaches of Jamaica, where the over-worked, enjoyment-deprived Stella can forget about her job, her high-maintainance sisters and being the perfect mother.
The lush surroundings eventually work their magic.Stella meets and falls for a Jamaican named Winston.Played by newcomer Taye Diggs, Winston is handsome, intelligent, sexy, attentive, charming and crazy about Stella.
There's only one problem: he's only twenty years old.
Directing this tale of cross-generational love is first time feature film director Kevin Rodney Sullivan, whose most recent work was behind the camera for the HBO television movie "Soul of the Game" which received best picture nominations from the CableACE Awards and the NAACP Image Awards.
Terry McMillan's first novel, Mama, was published in 1987 and established her in the literary world. Her second novel was Disappearing Acts, published in 1989.Next came her best-selling novel Waiting to Exhale, which she adapted into a hit motion picture. She also served as co-executive producer on the film, which starred Angela Bassett, Whitney Houston and Lela Rochon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
