- Story Text: The latest British low-budget film hits the screens in
a limited release in the United Kingdom on Friday (August
28th).The comedy 'The Real Howard Spitz' is director Vadim
Jean's fourth feature, and with a budget of $5 million, his
most expensive to date.
Described as an 'intelligent family comedy' the film
stars Kelsey Grammer, from the hit TV comedy 'Frasier'.
Kelsey, in his first feature film role, plays Howard, a worn
out detective novelist who has hit hard times, but resorts -
successfully - to writing children's books...even though he
hates kids.
Co-stars are Amanda Donohoe from 'LA Law' and seven year
old Genevieve Tessier, making her film debut.
The film is an Anglo-Canadian co-production between UK
based Metrodome Films and the Canadian company Imagex, and was
filmed in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Los Angeles.
Director Vadim Jean's first film, the 1993 comedy 'Leon
the Pig Farmer' won critical acclaim...at a time when the
British film industry was at a low.
Jean says at the time there was a period of four or five
weeks when "Leon the Pig Farmer" was the only film in
production in the United Kingdom. Now, five years later on he
believes the British industry has never been in better
shape...with much credit going to the marketing expertise
from the United States.
Describing himself as a 'guerrilla' film maker he says
he's not interested in making big budget blockbusters, and
prefers to make 'films from the heart'. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
