- Story Text: Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach completed another leg of their tour in Los Angeles on Tuesday (October 20) night. The pairing of the pop icon and the composer raised a few eyebrows at first, but the two appear to fit together surprisingly well in support of their new collaboration.
Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach have been working on their new album, "Painted From Memory" for two years.
Composed by Bacharach and sung by Costello, the eleven track production contains the stamp and unmistakable sound of both artists. On the face of it they seem like an odd combination, but they've both been in the pop world for a number of years - only in different generations.Still, the happy go lucky melodies of "What the World Needs Now" and "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" snuggling alongside "Oliver's Army" and "Veronica" can only be described as an accident that's happened - happily. The collaboration "is both risky and adventurous" according to Bacharach, "for Elvis" more than him.
Although Elvis credits his new partner with improving his work, "by re-shaping the music he'd written for the better", he freely admits that "giving up control wasn't easy."
Behind the scenes on Tuesday (October 20), the customary soundcheck was underway, and naturally there was still some tweaking to do both orchestrally and vocally.
Both men appeared to be taking everything in their stride, acknowleging their satisfaction or otherwise as they moseyed through numbers like "In The Darkest Place."
It's a collaboration that is "aimed at women" and most of the tracks are about love gone wrong or other "experiences that people can relate to".Costello was inspired both by "things that happened to him and to other people" when he was writing the lyrics for the new songs and is quite sure people "will see a little bit of themselves in there somewhere"
The bulk of the concert performance is from the new album, but diehard fans, on both sides can look forward to a solo section too.
This is not the first time Costello has teamed up with another musician; in the past he's worked with Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett, The Chieftains and The Brodsky Quartet amongst others. Then, as now, his message is loud and clear - "his aim is true". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
