- Story Text: On the 50th anniversary of the landmark survey of sexual practices and attitudes by Doctor Alfred Kinsey, a young female newcomer to filmmaking named Troy Beyer has released "Let's Talk About Sex," a fictional documentary that features women talking openly and graphically about dating and sex in the 90's.
Although her on-screen credits include only supporting roles in the films "The Cotton Club," "The Five Heartbeats" and television's "Dynasty," Troy Beyer was able to pull together a shoe-string budget to write, direct and star in "Let's Talk About Sex."
The film is actually part fictional story, part real-life documentary about the sexual habits of everyday women in the trendy South Beach neighborhood of Miami, Florida.Beyer plays the lead role of Jazz, a frustrated newspaper advice columnist who dreams of having her own talk show focusing solely on women and their opinions about sex.
To achieve her dreams, she hits the streets of South Beach with her small video camera and conducts a series of shockingly explicit interviews with various women about their sexual likes, dislikes and talents.Helping her produce her documentary are her two friends Lena, played by Randi Ingerman, and Michelle, played by Paget Brewster.
Beyer shot the film in just 18 days with a three hundred thousand dollar budget. All the interviews in the documentary were conducted with real-life women in Miami, non of them were scripted or prepared in any way.In addition to the the documentary sequences, Beyer arranged locations and cast supporting actors at the last minute and sometimes by the skin-of-their-teeth.
To help her leading actresses establish the close cararaderie and funny banter of best friends, Beyer rented a three-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment that she, Brewster and Ingerman lived in throughout the production.
The idea for the film came from a late-night, girl-talk session that Beyer was involved in, just like the sessions depicted in the film.Beyer says she wanted to make the film to give women a voice when it comes to the subject of sex, rather than just hearing from men all the time.
She also finds it ironic that her film is being released on the 50th anniversary of Dr.Kinsey's now-famous report on human sexuality. That report, although debated thoroughly in the scientific community, is credited with opening up the debate about sexual behavior and de-mystifying it.
With "Let's Talk About Sex" now playing in theatres, Beyer's film could have the same effect. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
