- Story Text: Capping off a busy week of celebrity tributes, the film preservation organization American Cinematheque paid tribute to Hollywood muscleman Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday (October 18) at the group's 13th Annual Moving Picture Ball.
Attended by a high-powered group of Hollywood luminaries, Schwarzenegger received the achievement award in recognition of his contributions to American Cinema.Past recipients of this honour include John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Michael Douglas, and Sean Connery.
Established in 1984, the American Cinematheque is a non-profit, viewer-supported film exhibition and cultural organization dedicated to the celebration of the moving picture in all its forms. The group presents film and video programming, the exhibition of rare works, special prints and post-screening discussions with filmmakers.
This year's honoree, Austrian-born actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, started his career as a bodybuilder, winning several European contests and international titles before moving to the United States.
A millionaire before the age of 22, Schwarzenegger decided to try acting and started out in a series of bodybuilding films including "Stay Hungry" and "Pumping Iron." These led to roles in cartoon-like fantasy films such as "Conan the Barbarian" and its sequel "Conan the Destroyer."
But he truely achieved fame when he took on the role of the murderous "Terminator" in James Cameron's 1984 film of the same name.He picked up the role again for Cameron's blockbuster 1991 sequel, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."
Although he has come to be associated with violent action fare, Schwarzenegger branched out into comedies in 1988 and began a long association with director Ivan Reitman.
Together, they went on to make the comedies "Twins" and "Junior," both co-starring Danny Devito, and "Kindergarten Cop."
He returned to making blockbuster action films with James Cameron in 1994, when they worked together on "True Lies."
This film was also notable for the introduction of former television actor Tom Arnold to the big screen and for Jamie Lee Curtis' Golden Globe-winning performance.
Other films in this genre included "Total Recall" with the still-to-be-discovered Sharon Stone and the 1996 summer hit "Eraser."
But Schwarzenegger isn't without his box office disappointments. The most infamous was the big-budgeted and very costly failure "Last Action Hero," for which Schwarzenegger took full responsibility, rather than blaming the production crew or studio as other stars have been known to do.
More recently, a campy turn as the villain Mr.Freeze in "Batman and Robin," also fell way below expectations at the box office. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
