- Story Text: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats', the longest running musical in Broadway history will soon be available on video.
The cast gathered at a lavish party in London Thursday (October 01) to mark the launch.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, the longest running musical in Broadway history and a worldwide smash, will now be available for the first time on video.
Disenchanted with Hollywod's version of his hit 'Evita,' which starred Madonna and Antonio Banderas, this time round Sir Andrew insisted on full control - personally producing and reviewing every aspect of the video.
The production took eighteen days, a crew of more than two hundred, and a custom-designed set at London's Adelphi theatre.
Featuring an all-star cast loaded with the original Cats members, the troupe stars Elaine Paige, reprising her memorable role as Grizabella and British movie and stage legend Sir John Mills who plays Gus the Theatre cat.
Composer Webber said: "The decision to film 'Cats' was something that had been hanging around for a long while. We had never really tried to take a theatre show and then interpret it for the camera - in this kind of way - so it's a great excitement to break new ground."
Easily the most legendary of Broadway musicals, Cats has found itself in the record books time and time again.
It is the longest runing musical on broadway, has received seven Tony awards, has been seen by more than 50 million people worlwide in 26 countries, and has take two BILLION dollars at the box office since its opening.
Plans are now afoot for a film version of Sir Andrew's "The Phantom of the Opera," with Evita star Antonio Banderas in the frame for the lead. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
