- Story Text: Following up on what could be described as his "cross-over" hit comedy "The Wedding Singer," Adam Sandler returns to the type of role that made him a hit with his fans in such films as "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore."
In his newest, "The Waterboy," he plays another lovable loser.
In "The Waterboy," Sandler plays Bobby Boucher, a socially inept 31-year old from the swamps of Louisiana who is home schooled and sheltered by his over-protective mama, played by Oscar-winner Kathy Bates.
His only contact with society is his waterboy job for a college football team where the players relentlessly make fun of him and his coach doesn't let him fight back. That all changes when he gets a new coach, played by "Happy Days"
star Henry Winkler, who lets him stand up for himself.
Bobby finally unleashes years of pent-up rage and is transformed into the most devastating tackler on the team.
He learns to play football, go to college, and fall in love with a local tomboy played by Fairuza Balk, all behind his mama's back.
As in his past films, Sandler has once again surrounded himself with college friends as co-writers, producers and directors. In the director's chair this time out is long-time friend Frank Coraci, who also directed Sandler and Drew Barrymore in the recent hit "The Wedding Singer."
Sandler's college buddies Tim Herlihy and Jack Giarraputo served as the film's co-writer and producer. The whole gang met up when they attended New York University together. They since have gone on to work with Sandler on the TV series "Saturday Night Live" and the feature films "Happy Gilmore" and "Bulletproof."
Although Sandler has always had a core group of devoted fans, it was "The Wedding Singer" that really introduced him to a brand new audience. It was his first true romantic comedy, and it earned more than 80 million dollars at the box office. It also put him into the club of Hollywood actors earning more than 10 million dollars per movie.
"The Waterboy" also marks the big screen reappearance for Henry Winkler who, aside from a brief cameo in the horror film "Scream," has been largely absent from movies in the past several years. His other screen credits include Ron Howard's "Night Shift" and "Heroes," but his real fame came when he played the memorable character "the Fonz" on the television series "Happy Days" during the 1970's.
"The Waterboy" opens in theatres throughout the United States on Friday, November 6. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
