- Story Text: Til Schweiger, one of Germany's hottest film talents, stars in a new film, "Der Eisbar" - the Polar Bear which premiered in Cologne on Wednesday (November 11).
Reuters met the film star to discuss the film in which he made his directorial debut.
"Der Eisbar" tells the tale of four young people who meet by coincidence one evening, and go on to experience a night they'll never forget.
Leo (Til Schweiger), known on the street as "the polar bear," is a contract killer with a big problem: he thinks his "best parts" are too small. This integral problem causes him to kill the wrong person -- an error that he knows will likely cost him his life.
Another character, Nico, stops to buy a packet of cigarettes. In the short time that she's away from her car, her Mercedes-Benz oldtimer is stolen.Little do the thieves know that in the trunk, a time bomb is ticking away, and Nico slowly realises that her mistake will also cost her dearly.
Nico and Leo find peace and quiet in a dank bar, to think over their situations and work out what they are going to do.
They get to know each other over double Tequillas, cigarettes and bad jokes. They sit and wait for something to happen, maybe for the end of the world.
In the meantime, Fabian and Reza, proud drivers of a stolen Mercedes-Benz oldtimer, are simply out to have fun.
They hold up an American fast food restaurant and demand 40 cheesburgers -- to go.As they try to find a quiet place to devour their bounty, both police and gangsters are out searching for the bomb. And the night is about to explode....
Til Schweiger is not only the star of "Der Eisbar" he also co-produced the film and made his debut as director.
"It was very stressful, very painful but also very satisfying to have complete control of the project," said Schweiger in a quiet moment after it was over.
With his production company, Mr.Brown Entertainment, he hopes to find more American scripts, translate them into German, and produce them with European film sponsoring money.
The film premiered in Cologned on Wednesday (November 11) evening in Cologne's Cinedom cinema, and will open in theatres across Germany on Thursday (Nov.12).
The film will be released internationally at a later date. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
