- Story Text: Ex Beatle Paul McCartney has introduced his new CD to hi German fans. "Wingspan - Hits and History" is a musical retrospective of McCartney's time with 'Wings', the group he founded in the footsteps of 'The Beatles'.
Paul McCartney and his late wife Linda set up 'Wings' in 1971, just over a year after 'The Beatles' split up. Some critics branded the band a weak version of 'The Beatles', but they went on to become one of the most popular bands at the time.
McCartney wanted to start again from scratch. The fluctuating popularity of the two bands is a "generational thing", he explained at a press conference launching his new CD "Wingspan" in Berlin. "Wingspan" is a double CD containing the best of 'Wings' music: 40 songs, 17 of which sold more than a million. For two and a half hours of music including such hits as "Mull of Kintyre" and "Live and Let Die" for the price of a single album, it's a pretty good deal according to McCartney.
"Wingspan" is also a film which McCartney has been making for the past three years. It traces the history of 'Wings' beginnings after the break-up of 'The Beatles' in the early seventies through to the end of the decade. The band name "Wings" came to McCartney after Linda had given birth to Stella: "Whenever you have a baby, you're always very thankful and in tune with the mysteries of life," says McCartney, "I was musing on that in the hospital, thinking about angels and stuff, and I thought of wings. It seemed to be a good name for a band." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
