- Story Text: Pop star Ricky Martin visited a makeshift school for
children whose schoolhouse was destroyed by the tsunami
disaster on Friday (January 14) during a tour of troubled
zones on Phuket island.
The singer also visited a camp where thousands were
left homeless by the tidal wave.
It was Martin's second day in the region after arriving
on Thursday (January 13).
The singer, who is a representative for UNICEF, said he
would help his organisation, the Ricky Martin Foundation,
in a project to build homes for victims whose houses were
swept away by the tsunami.
"I cannot stay in my house with my arms crossed. I
have to go there and do whatever it takes to create
awareness of this issue and let them know that they are not
alone, that we can help," Martin told reporters.
The pop star has been pursued by a barrage of media
during his trip in the region where he also visited
destroyed villages.
Martin has focused on the fate of children after his
concerns over the issue of child trafficking. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
