- Story Text: A parade of celebrities walked the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (January 16), including nominees Clint Eastwood, Cate Blanchett, Hilary Swank, and Leonardo DiCaprio. The Globes are seen as the first big awards show of the season.
Road comedy "Sideways," about two middle-aged men looking for love in California's wine country, has been a favorite of critics and been nominated in several categories, including best supporting actress in a comedy for Virginia Madsen. " I can't believe I'm here, it was such a long-shot for someone like me to make it to this red carpet and so I'm having such a good time," Madsen told Reuters.
Morgan Freeman, nominated for best supporting actor in a drama for "Million Dollar Baby," had thoughts of his co-stars and director on his mind. "Clint (Eastwood) and Hilary (Swank) -- icing on the cake. Great script. It's a story you're not going to run into normally. It's a story that doesn't apologize for itself. It takes its line to the end."
Cate Blanchett, nominated for her turn as Katherine Hepburn in "The Aviator," had practical thoughts on her mind. "I hope I have comfortable shoes on because this particular one is a really, really, long walk," Blanchett said about the walk from the limousine to the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Perennial favorite Nicole Kidman, nominated for "Birth," was treating the night as the big party it has become. "I think seeing every body and seeing the fans and just being able to sort of play, you know?"
Even California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had taken the day off from work to join in the festivities.
"Today there's no politics, today is only fun. I hope that Clint Eastwood wins with his film "Million Dollar Baby,"
it's my favorite film and he's my idol as an actor, so I hope he wins everything," said Schwarzenegger.
The Golden Globes, given out by about 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are seen around the world and often provide hints on which films might be nominated for Oscars, the top film honors in the United States given in February by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In the past, many winners here have also earned Oscars, and this year the race for awards has been particularly wide open, with several films competing for top honors. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
