- Story Text: Broadway's Oscars - the Tony nominations, were announced in New York on Monday (May 07).
The surprise of the day was the Mel Brooks musical "The Producers" that walked away with a record 15 nominations.
The American Theatre Wing's 55th Annual Antoinette Perry Tony Awards, were selected Monday (May 7) at the renowned Sardi's Restaurant in New York.
The announcements for 'Broadway's Oscars' were made by Reba Mcintyre, who is currently starring in "Annie Get Your Gun"
and Eric McCormack, the star of "Will and Grace," who takes over the starring role in "The Music Man" from May the 8th of 2001.
The Producers received a whopping 15 Tony Award nods, surpassing Company's record for the most nominations ever.
(Company set the record in1971.) The Mel Brooks mega-hit now boasts six nominated actors, including two in the Lead Actor category (Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick) and three (Roger Bart, Gary Beach and Brad Oscar) in the Featured Actor category. As expected, nominations also went to Mel Brooks for score, Brooks and Thomas Meehan for book and Susan Stroman for direction and choreography.
The ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 3 and will be broadcast on PBS and CBS.

Special Tony Award A Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater will be given to musical director Paul Gemignani.
Regional Theater Tony Award: Based on a recommendation by the American Theater Critics Association, a Tony Award for regional theater will be given to Victory Gardens Theater of Chicago, Illinois. This award is given to a regional theater company that has displayed a continuous level of artistic achievement contributing to the growth of theatre nationally. A $25,000 grant will be made by Clairol's Nice'n Easy to the not-for-profit Victory Gardens Theater, which was founded in 1974.
Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theater Tony Honors for excellence in theatre will be given to Betty Corwin and the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the playwrights workshop New Dramatists, and Theatre World, the annual statistics and photography book which has been published since 1945.
