- Story Text: Topless dancers and colourful floats filled the streets of Rio de Janeiro on the night of February 9/10. The giant parade of samba schools (escolas de samba) was the climax of Brazil's annual carnival. The pageant is regarded as the culmination of dedication and hard work by the performers of Brazil's many samba dance centres. Judges are appointed to analyse the dancing and the best school wins the coveted Champion of the Avenue title (Campeao da Avenida). The more intricate and athletic their choreography, the more likely the performers are to impress. But the smallest mistake or the slightest slip could cost a school the title. The costumes and floats, often the work of leading artists, are also important. So are the performances of individual dancers. For example, the Porta-estandarte and the Mestre Sala (the standard bearer and the master of ceremonies) carry their school's banner, and the Destaques are the exotically dressed central characters of the sambas. The parade of the schools represents one of the three main events of the annual Rio carnival. The festivities begin with the 'outdoor carnival' with revellers dressed in colourful costumes, followed by the 'indoor carnival' where bands play dance music into the early hours of the morning. The climax of the festivities is the samba parade, which brings the colour and excitement on to the streets.
