- Story Text: It has been a busy new year for Stockard Channing. Not even a month in and she is in London shooting a new movie, 'Red Mercury'.
Channing plays the owner of a Greek restaurant who is taken hostage - along with her diners - by post 9/11 terrorists.
The movie, which is being shot in the trendy London district of Clerkenwell, has a speedy shoot of just five weeks.
"Yes, it is actually, to the point that when they first contacted me about it I thought well that couldn't be real because it's nearly Christmas and nothing starts right before Christmas and in fact I realised that's the way they're doing these particular films. And I'm very glad that everybody took it seriously, had real conversations, and here I am."
Channing plays Penelope and gets to work again with 'West Wing' co-star Ron Silver. Silver plays a New Yorker, Sidney, who is one of the unfortunate diners.
"It's a hostage situation' says Channing, 'the police are trying to get the hostages out... the form may be fairly conventional but the content is new because of the cast of characters involved and so the stakes of this particular hostage event are quite high. I mean given the fact that you find out these kids have dirty bombs."
Other lead roles are played by British stars Pete Postlethwaite and Juliet Stevenson.
Channing's next commitment is her final series of 'West Wing'.
"That commitment will be ended in a few months because the administration will come to an end and there'll be a new administration next year - which is a very unusual thing to be dealt with in a television series. We're in our 6th year now. I'm very proud of it." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
