- Story Text: Hollywood star Michael Douglas arrived in Bangkok on Thursday (January 20) with hopes of raising awareness about the tsunami disaster which killed more than 100,000 people in Southeast Asia.
The winner of two Oscar awards, including one for his iconic role in the 80's hit Wall Street, is in the Thai capital to attend the Bangkok International Film Festival where he is expected to honour his film director friend Joel Schumacher.
"My purpose is to be a part of the Bangkok Film Festival and to honour my friend, director Joel Schumacher," The hollywood star told reporters on arrival in Bankok But the actor said he was deeply disturbed by the deadly tsunami and wanted to help.
"My message is deep, deep sorrow for all the families that lost relatives and to thank the Thai people for their kindness. People have come back and said how generous and wonderful they were here, so it's a terrible tragedy," said Douglas.
The Hollywood veteran, who is married to screen siren Catherine Zeta-Jones, has starred in blockbusters like Fatal Attraction and Romancing the Stone over his decades-long career. On top of his acting accolades, Douglas became the fifth celebrity in 1998 to be chosen by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to act as a Messenger of Peace.
Organisers said the film festival, which opened on the 13th of January, will steer away from Hollywood glits and glamour to focus on the humanitarian efforts currently under way to help tsunami survivors.
Douglas is expected to honour Schumacher, who is the director of the much anticipated screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber's Phantom of the Opera, during the festival whichJanuary 24. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
