- Story Text: The Aviator's 14 nominations by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts include Martin Scorsese for best director, Leonardo di Caprio for best actor and Cate Blanchett for best supporting actress. Scorsese has strong competition from Mike Leigh's acclaimed tale of a backstreet abortionist in the 1950s - 'Vera Drake' - which receives eleven nods, including best director and best actress for Imelda Staunton. Marc Forster for Finding Neverland, Michael Gondry for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Michael Mann for Collateral, are also vying for best director British actress Kate Winslet is in the happy position of two nominations in the best actress category: for her role in 'Finding Neverland' and her performance in 'Eternal Sunshine'. In the past this situation has often resulted in the actor in question cancelling him/herself out.
Jamie Foxx receives nominations for best actor in 'Ray' and best supporting actor in 'Collateral'.
Also vying for best actor is Golden Globe winner Leonardo di Caprio, Johnny Depp, Gael Garcia Bernal - for his performance in 'The Motorcycle Diaries' - and Jim Carrey for 'Eternal Sunshine'.
Veteran British star Julie Christie has a best supporting actress nomination for her role in Finding Neverland, but faces tough competition from Cate Blanchett (The Aviator), Natalie Portman (Closer), Meryl Streep (The Manchurian Candidate) and Heather Craney (Vera Drake).
Actors who failed to make the Bafta shortlist this year include Al Pacino for 'The Merchant of Venice', Jude Law for 'Closer', Nicole Kidman for 'Birth' and Tom Cruise for 'Collateral'. Clint Eastwood's Golden Globe-lavished 'Million Dollar Baby' also failed to make the nominations list.
The BAFTA awards will be hosted for the fifth time by Stephen Fry and will take place on Februrary 12, 2005.
