- Story Text: Coming just after an entertainment industry panel
issued a report that said women have made great strides in
Hollywood but still have a long way to go, the organization
Women in Film on Thursday (December 3) held its first annual
Mentor Awards, honouring the men who most helped women make
gains in the entertainment business.
The most famous of the honorees was Oscar winning
filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who, in addition to being
responsible for such films as "Schindler's List," "Jurassic
Park," and "Raiders of the Lost Ark," also is one of the
co-founders and partners in DreamWorks Studios.
The other recipients included Frank Mancuso Sr., the
chairman and CEO of MGM Studios; veteran film and television
producer Edgar Scherick; Jim Wiatt, the co-chairman and co-CEO
of the mighty ICM talent agency; and Casey Silver, who, until
this past Monday, was the chairman of Universal Pictures.
Silver was fired on Monday, November 30 after the two most
recent Universal releases, Brad Pitt's "Meet Joe Black" and
"Babe: Pig in the City," bombed at the box office.
One award was given out posthumously.Actor Gabriel Byrne
presented a special Mentor Award to the late actor/director
John Cassavetes, who directed such films as "Husbands," "Edge
of the City," "Gloria" and "Woman Under the Influence." His
widow actress Gena Rowlands accepted the honor on his behalf.
Cassavetes directed Rowlands to two Oscar nominations, one
for "Woman Under the Influence" and the other for "Gloria,"
which is now being re-made by Sidney Lumet with Sharon Stone
and Rowlands again in the cast.
The award recipients were chosen because the group Women
in Film believes they have supported, encouraged and promoted
women in the film and television businesses for many years.
The Mentor Awards is their way of acknowledging and thanking
them for that support.
This is the last event of the year in the organisation's
busy schedule. For that reason, it was nicknamed the "Martini
Shot" gala, which is the term Hollywood filmmakers use for the
last shot of the day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
