- Story Text: The pace of the Cannes Film Festival quickens as two more films enter the race for the Palme d'Or on Thursday.Winner of the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion Takeshi Kitano presented 'Kikujiro' a whimsical journey of the laughter and tears of a young boy in search of the mother he's never known.
While Thursday's second offering is yet another moody portrayal of French love games, with Jacques Maillot's 'Nos Vies Heureuses' -- 'Our Happy Lives'.
Takeshi Kitano's film 'Kikujiro' has been touted by critics here as yet another masterpiece.
The Japanese movie examines the rather unlikely relationship between a young boy, Masao, with his irresponsible middle-aged escort Kikujiro, chosen to accompany Masao on his quest to find his mother.
Kikujiro's excusion with the nine-year old child culminates in a series of adventures for the odd couple.Along the way, the two discover they have more in common than they could have ever believed.
This poignant tale punctuated by the fantasy of the boy's dreams, teaches Kikujiro a heart warming lesson -- that sometimes it takes a child's games to help us see exactly what went wrong with our own lives.
French film, 'Nos Vies Heureuses', concentrates on games of a different kind -- the games of love.
Directed by Jacques Maillot, the movie looks at six characters, who have six interweaving destinies.
Julie is being released from hospital after an attempted suicide, Ali has left Morocco to study in France and Emilie is facing a broken love affair.
While Lucas is in limbo, Cecile is trying to dispel boredom by taking photographs and Jean Paul is a Catholic militant. Each of these characters need to leave their former identity behind to chart a new course....and naturally this voyage is portrayed with usual French 'de rigeur' emotional trauma, fighting and suffering. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
