- Story Text: Oscar winning actor Cuba Gooding, Jr.made his first foray into leading man territory on Tuesday, June 1 when he attended the Los Angeles premiere of his new film "Instinct"
along with his co-star and fellow Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins and director Jon Turteltaub.
For Gooding's first leading role, he plays an ambitious psychiatrist named Theo Caulder who has been asked to evaluate the case of anthropologist and primatologist Ethan Powell, played by Hopkins.
A noted scientist, Powell vanished four years ago while studying the reclusive mountain gorillas in Rwanda. When a group of park rangers discovered Powell living among the gorillas, he turned on them, brutally murdering two of the rangers.Caulder becomes intrigued by the case and, sensing a career-making opportunity and a possible book deal, askes to be assigned to the case.
But not long after his first prison cell session with Powell, Caulder realizes that there's more to Powell's story than meets the eye and soon the roles of doctor and patient become mixed up with the roles of teacher and student, with some important lessons about humanity on the agenda.
"Instinct" also co-stars Donald Sutherland as Caulder's mentor and boss Ben Hillard, Maura Tierney as Powell's estranged daughter and George Dzundza as a prison psychiatrist helping Caulder with the case. The film is directed by Jon Turteltaub, who previously worked with John Travolta on "Phenomenon."
Production took place in Jamaica, Florida and on soundstages in Los Angeles.Although part of the story is set in Rwanda, the filmmakers were unable to shoot there.
Oscar-winning special effects and creature creator Stan Winston created the gorillas used in the scenes set in Africa.
