- Story Text: Sigourney Weaver and many of the stars of the four
films in the popular "Alien" sci-fi/horror series attended a
special commemorative screening of the original "Alien" on
Wednesday, June 2 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the
landmark thriller by Ridley Scott.
The special screening was held at Hollywood's historic
Egyptian theater, in the same theater the original "Alien"
celebrated its premiere on May 27, 1979.
When the original film directed by Ridley Scott came out,
it was praised for its unique storytelling techniques, its
ground-breaking special effects and its depiction of the
classic conflict between man and the unknown forces of nature.
Except, in this case, it boiled down to a battle between woman
and nature. That woman was Sigourney Weaver.
Although she had previously had a small role in Woody
Allen's Oscar-winning "Annie Hall," "Alien" was her first
starring role, and she called it "an extraordinary learning
experience" that gave her the chance to work with co-stars
like John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, Tom Skerritt and
Yaphet Kotto. It also launched her career as an international
movie star.
Seven years later, director James Cameron took over the
helm of the series when he created the sequel "Aliens," which
turned Weaver's character into more of a rough-and-tumble
action hero and further pushed the ever-expanding boundries of
special effects. It also garnered Weaver an Oscar nomination
for Best Actress and won an Oscar for its special effects.
In the second film, Weaver co-starred with Bill Paxton,
Paul Reiser and Michael Biehn.
In 1992 director David Fincher, who later went on to make
such hits as "Seven" and "The Game," created "Alien 3" which
was largely regarded as one of the low points in the series.
Finally, in 1997, French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet brought
the final installment "Alien Resurrection" to the screen with
Weaver and Winona Ryder in the cast. It, too, was critically
panned and regarded as a weaker entry in the series.
On the occassion of the original film's 20th anniversary,
20th Century Fox Home Video is releasing digitally remastered
editions of all four films and, for the first time, DVD
versions of the entire series. They contain
never-before-released film footage and original theatrical
trailers, bonus scenes, and cast and crew interviews.
The package also contains an all-new feature-length
documentary highlighting the creation of the series as well as
commentaries by Ridley Scott. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
