  • Story Text: The public had their say in Los Angeles on Tuesday night (May 25) when they honoured their heroes of film and music at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.John Travolta, Tom Hanks, Mariah Carey and teen sensation, Ricky Martin, all walked away with trophies from the fans.
    The Blockbuster Entertainment Awards are different to other ones in that fans choose the winners.More than 25 million votes were cast worldwide in Blockbuster video stores, Planet Hollywood restaurants and on the Blockbuster web site.
    Apart from being a "very hip award show, attendees were also looking forward to meeting teen sensation, Ricky Martin"
    For the most part, Hollywood is "impressed with the music and the talent" of the Latino hearthrob, but not everyone is aware of Ricky mania.
    Ricky Martin opened the show with his hit song Living La Vita Loca.
    Tom Hanks who was voted Favourite Actor In a Drama for Saving Private Ryan "was amazed at how big the Blockbuster Awards had become", but was grateful to the fans.
    Cuba Gooding Jnr probably said what most people were thinking, that "despite Hollywoods' scorn, his award for Favourite Supporting Actor (Drama/Romance) in What Dreams May come, was proof, that audiences want blockbuster movies, whether they're formulaac or not".That's just fine with him, because "he likes making movies that people want to see and loves it even more when they turn up in droves"
    For John Travolta and Nicholas Cage, it was all about "loyalty" and "knowing that all your hard work makes a difference to someone's life"
    Teen idol, Ricky Martin was voted Favourite Latino artist, but refused to take any credit for the "so-called NEW latino movement.That should go to, Gloria Estefan, Jose Feliciano and Santana who made a huge contribution in music long before Ricky arrived on the scene"
    He's also smart enough to know that "its easy to get overwhelmed with the fame and makes a conscious effort to keep things on an even keel"
    There's no doubt that the artists "feel very honoured to be singled out by the fans" who make it possible "for them to live out their dreams".
    The fifth annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards will air on Wednesday June 16th from 8pm till 10pm on Fox.
