- Story Text: Every now and then a band appears that doesn't fall into any particular music category - hurricane #1 are such a band.Mixing pop songs with guitar riffs and acoustic rock, the group are currently delighting audiences on their UK tour before heading off to Japan and Asia.
Hurricane #1, a four piece band from England, belong to that rare group of musicians that cannot be labelled, cannot be defined and definately cannot be ignored.
With a Scottish boxer as their frontman, and a workaholic guitarist as their songwriter, Hurricane #1 were never destined to be another run-of-the-mill band.
With two albums under their belt, the band are currently touring with their new album, "Only the Strongest will Survive"
- a record containing fourteen songs, each with their own identity.
The band take their name from a variety of quotes and lyrics from artists such as Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth and Neil Young.
Singer, Alex Lowe, has been blessed with the voice of a soul singer, while guitarist Andy Bell plays like a cross between The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page.
Add in the bassline from Will Pepper and the astounding beats of drummer Gaz Farmer and you end up with a band that is set for international success.
Alan McGee, head of Oasis' label Creation Records, put the band together after advertising in a local music magazine - not a lonely hearts advert as Andy joked! The band has a variety of musical influences - Alex cites his as being Marvin Gaye, early Rolling Stones and '70's soul, while Andy is a huge fan of '80's guitar bands such as Sonic Youth, Stone Roses and My Bloody Valentine.
Hurricane #1 will be playing to huge audiences at several European festivals this month, including the infamous Glastonbury and Reading shows.
They have changed dramatically since the release of their debut album - long gone are those reckless days of recording an album in three weeks and then completing a rather drunken tour to promote it.
These days, the band have realised that their music deserves more than that - they spent several weeks in the studio recording their multi-layered second album, and they have embarked on an almost alcohol-free tour.
