- Story Text: Virtually unknown a year ago except in their homeland, Canadian band 'Barenaked Ladies,' have taken the world by storm with their hit, "One Week".With their unique live shows and madcap humour, the band recently received the Best Selling Canadian Group of the Year award at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo.
Canadian band, Barenaked Ladies, formed almost ten years ago and have only just achieved the kind of success that their loyal fans always hoped for and the band always longed for.
With their smash hit song "One Week" in music charts around the world and tour dates selling out everywhere, the band are riding high on their new-found fame, which is well-deserved after playing around two hundred concerts a year since 1992.
This quirky five-piece have released five albums, with their debut album, "Gordon" quickly becoming gold.
Their madcap sense of humour comes across on their songs, on stage and in interviews, and new fans can expect a few surprises when seeing them perform live for the first time.
Their shows include strange dance routines, cover versions of Spice Girls and Celine Dion tracks, and a stage bombardment of boxes of macaroni and cheese! Singer and guitarist Ed Robertson explains, "...there's a line in a song called 'If I Had A Million Dollars' that says 'if we had a million dollars, we wouldn't have to eat Kraft dinner', which is in Canada sort of the staple food of students and bachelors...and five year olds. It's this dried pasta with powdered cheese that you just boil and mix everything together - somebody whipped a box on stage when we sang that line and we all laughed and thought it was very funny and then the next night four or five boxes came up and then when the Internet became widely used it spread like wildfire and some nights there were four hundred boxes flying at the stage."
Currently supporting English band, The Beautiful South, and enjoying success with their new album, "Stunt", the band are set to perform a few more concerts in the United Kingdom, before playing a series of gigs in America, this time headlining it, with The Beautiful South in support.
It has not all been plain sailing for the band - they have had their share of heartache in the past - Ed's brother, Doug, was killed in a motorcycle accident, guitarist and singer Steven Page went through a period of heavy drinking and depression, and instrumentalist Kevin Hearn has only recently won his battle with leukaemia.
But it seems that the bad times are now behind them and Barenaked Ladies can now enjoy the sucess that they so richly deserve. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
