- Story Text: French singing sisters, Les Nubians arrived in New York to promote their album, Princesses Nubiennes, which became the first French language vocal album to appear in the Top 100 on the Billboard album chart.
Founded by two sisters from Bordeaux, France and inspired by the conscious rap of Public Enemy, De La Soul and arrested Development as well as the smoother sounds of Soul II Soul and Des'ree, Les Nubians are a new breed of Afropean-styled hip hop.
Les Nubians debut album, Princess Nubiennes, mixes uplifting messages with contemporary hip-hop sytlings and has become the first French language album to make it on to the Billboard top 100 chart.
Les Nubians are equally influenced by classic soul, contemporary R&B and the inspiration of such African world music icons as Miriam Makeba, Ray Lema and Youssou N'Dour.
Born to a French father and Cameroonian mother, Helene and Celia Faussart learned how to sing at a young age.Even from their first performance as an a capella group, the two have been praised.
The debut album was recorded in France and England and with a core group of English and French backing musicians who've previously worked with the likes of Ronny Jordan, Positive Black Soul and Des'ree.
Their popularity in the U.S has shown that language is not a barrier to sales.The Parisian singers debut album is played regularly on American airwaves.
Celia and Helene are serous about the commitment to coicing the struggles of African women on the continent, 'Makeda' their first single named after the queen of Saba, addresses the historical msrepresntation of black people.
