- Story Text: Diana Krall talks about her latest album, "The Girl in the Other Room".
You certainly know what you are in for from when the very first cord is struck on, "The Girl in the Other Room."
"I think it was an obvious choice to start this record with "Stop This World," Diana Krall told Reuters.
"Especially for me being known being for singing sort of sultry, smoky, romantic standards to sort of set the album off right away with, stop this world let me off, there are too many pigs in the same trough was very cool for me and like 'lets just get right to it.'"
In London to promote the release of her eighth album, Diana Krall is keen to point out that, "The Girl in the Other Room", isn't just a collection of the same music you might have heard before.
"It just came to life, then you look at it and you have seventeen tunes recorded and you put it together and it becomes a book of short stories."
These short stories tell of grief and reconciliation, after the death of her mother due to cancer in 2002, as well as tails of joy and moments of intimacy, shared with her new husband, British born singer songwriter, Elvis Costello.
The album is the first co-produced by Krall and her long-time producer Tommy LiPuma. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood and Avatar Recording, New York City, the sessions were engineered throughout 2003 by another long-term cohort, Al Schmitt.
This album marks a turning point in Krall's colossally successful career. Now 39-years old, this native of Canada has taken pen to paper and tried to inject something of herself into this album.
"It is a very exciting thing to bring your tune in like, 'Abandoned Masquerade', which I brought in. And you don't know what it is going to sound like, I've had being playing it on the piano and singing it. Second take, it was on the record and we are looking at each other going wow."
Collaborating with her husband, Elvis Costello on this album.
"To work with somebody who you admire and trust and respect as a person as well as an artist. I think I am very fortunate to meet Elvis Costello when I did."
Other writing contributions are made from Mose Allison, Tom Waits, Chris Smither, Arthur Herzog and Jodi Mitchell.
Promoting this album as seen Krall travel to Australia, Japan, mainland Europe, the UK and now she returns to the States for the final leg of the promotional circus.
But with the first leg of promotion work all but finished, Krall now sets her sights on taking the album out on the road.
"I feel good, I feel like this is what it is, this is what I have done. This is the most honest thing I could do at the time and now I am thinking about other things and that other thing is playing. Playing all that stuff I have been talking about, instead of talking about it just playing it and hoping that people react to it and live performance is the best place."
