- Story Text: Italian dancers defy gravity in a play of water and
light as "Waterwall" is performed in the IberoAmerican
theatre festival in Colombia.
An Italian theatre group delivered this week one of
the most anticipated performances in Colombia's
IberoAmerican Theatre Festival, bringing together a play of
water, lights, choreography and heady rhythms in "Waterwall".
Twelve dancers from Italy's Materiali Resistenti Dance
Company suspended by harnesses, elastic cords, swings and
trapezes climbed, swung and snuck across a large metal
scaffold under a cascading waterfall.
Ivan Manzoni, "Waterwall"'s creator, is a young Italian
choreographer who breaks down the traditional barriers of
architecture and the language of dance with a dynamic and
pulsing personal stamp.
Manzoni said he created "Waterwall" to explore the
balance between the movement of dancers and machines in the
hope of giving the audience an "unforgettable vision".
"Waterwall"'s waterfall is four metres high, ten metres
wide and uses 16,000 litres of water.
"The mechanical structure that was created for the
waterfall is one of the most complicated in the history of
Italian engineering. We are proud of it and I think that
it's something worthy of being shown to the world," Manzoni said.
The IberoAmerican theatre festival, one of the largest
in the world, runs until Sunday (April 11). More than
1,200 artists are participating in 540 shows. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
