- Story Text: Pint sized pop idol Kylie Minogue is trying to crack the American market, after more than a decade of stardom in the rest of the world - but Kylie says she's not going to "sweat it" Stateside.
The Australian TV soap actress turned pop icon has been a celebrity for more than a decade, except in the US. But now, it could be Kylie Minogue's turn in the American spotlight.
With her single "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" at number 17 in the US charts, Kylie decided the time is right to follow up on the notoriously hard to crack American market.
At Virgin Megastore in the heart of New York's Times Square, fans lined up to get Kylie's signature on her latest CD. The pint sized singer, though, says she's actually happy to remain fairly anonymous in the US, declaring that any further success with American fans will be an added bonus; "For many years I've just thought the States is a not a place I'm going to work, I'll just come on vacation and I was quite content with that, but I did always give myself an escape clause, I said that if I , "If" by a miracle, that I had a song that started to take off I would come and follow it."
Kylie's latest album "Fever" has sold more than 2 million copies world-wide, and will be released in the US on February 26. Her last top five hit on American soil was "The Loco-Motion" when the pop star had a very different image.
Long, long gone is the "girl next door" look. The video to "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" sees the tiny singer dancing provocatively in a slinky white dress. She says it was a difficult job "keeping her modesty", only managed "with the help of a few little bits of tape".
However nonchalant Kylie may be about her American reception, fans are positive she'll be a smash hit. Keo Shultz says "I discovered her in London in '94 with the song Confide in Me, and I've been a huge huge fan and I've been waiting for her to come to America for so long because I think she's so incredible". Dudley Klute is pleased his friends will finally understand all the hype that's been surrounding Kylie overseas for many years; "It's good because I've been telling people for a long time about her, and they're like 'what are you talking about' - its the Loco-Motion that's all they remember, but with the last record, Spinning Around being so good, I thought it was only a matter of time before she takes over America and its finally happened and I'm very happy for her." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
