- Story Text: Two low-budget films, a dramatisation of the 1972 "Bloody Sunday" massacre in Northern Ireland and the Japanese animated fantasy "Spirited Away" shared the Golden Bear award for best film at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday (February 17).
British/Irish film Bloody Sunday and Japanese animated film Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) shared the top Golden Bear award for best film at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday (February 17).
On the final day of the 12-day festival, Silver Bear prizes were awarded to Otar Iosseliani as best director for his film Monday Morning, Halle Berry as best actress for her role in Monsters Ball, Jacques Gamblin for Safe Conduct and the ensemble of actresses in the film 8 Femmes.
A Silver Bear for best film music was awarded to Antoine Duhamel for his music in the film Safe Conduct.
Reading a statement from Hayao Miyazaki, the Director of Spirited Away who could not be present, the International Distributor Steven Alpert said it was a wonderful thing for animated films to finally get the recognition they deserve.
The Berlinale is the worlds first major festival of the new year and considered after Cannes and alongside Venice as one of the worlds most important film festivals. A total of 23 films were competing for the prestigious Golden Bear and Silver Bear awards.
