- Story Text: Female stars of stage and screen gave the "V" sign in New York on Saturday night - declaring "V" is for Victory, Valentine and Vagina. Appearances by the likes of Oscar nominee Marissa Tomei, Glenn Close and Jane Fonda were part of a fundraising effort for abused women called "V-Day."
In Manhattan actresses joined together to celebrate this year's "V-Day" - a global movement to stop violence against women. V-Day was created by Eve Ensler, author of the "Vagina Monologues" - now an internationally famous theatrical hit, portraying views of women around the world through monologues.
Star of the night was Oscar nominee Marisa Tomei, who's in the running for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "In The Bedroom". Tomei played a frustrated self-conscious teenager in her monologue.
Also performing was actress Rosie Perez, Isabella Rosselini and Glenn Close. Close has been involved with V-Day since its inception five years ago. She says V-Day has done a lot to empower women " In some ways it was very controversial, I mean nobody could say vagina out loud, I certainly had a hard time with it, and it kind of frees you up and brings you together with people whose work you are impressed with and it's kind of just been a rallying point to give women a voice".
But she kept her lips tightly sealed about who she's tipping for the winner of this Oscar for Best Picture, merely saying that she's glad independent films like "Iris" got a look-in. Close said
"I know what goes into making a movie and to just blithely say 'Oh that one's the best one, I hate saying that, I love Beautiful Mind, I love Lord of the Rings, the small independent movies that were recognised to me is always amazing, they're the movies that almost never got made, very difficult to find financing for movies like that - and now look at how many nominations you have, and I wish Hollywood would truly support movies like that."
V-Day takes place in hundreds of locations around the world and raises money to support women victims of rape, domestic abuse and oppression. Ensler "V" stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina ! -- - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
