- Story Text: The Rainforest Foundation's Annual Benefit concert took place at New York's Carnegie Hall (April 13) and featured Sting, Elton John, Billy Joel and Ricky Martin.
For the tenth year in a row, Sting headed up an all star cast of musicains in his ongoing attempt to raise money and awareness for the vanishing rainforests of the world and the people who inhabit them.
Elton John and James Taylor have each appeared at nine of the benefit concerts including this year's show featuring the music of Motown.
Among the highlights of the show was Elton John carrying around an illuminated voodoo skull singing, "I Put a Spell on You."
Grammy Award nominee for best new artist of year, Macy Gray, put on a stunning performance of an Aretha Franklin classic, "Baby, I Love You." Veteran performer, Tom Jones lit up the stage with his version of the classic, "It's a Man's World.
American rocker, Billy Joel drew a standing ovation for his performance of "Try a Little Tenderness." Gladys Knight sang her classic, "Midnight Train to Georgia" and then went on to duets with Sting and James Taylor.
Latin sensation, Ricky Martin was a show stopper with his rendition of "Light My Fire" and and a classic Santana tune.
He was well in step with the music and drew the attention of those in the crowd with his gyrating hips and shuffling feet.
According to the Millenium edition of The Guiness Book of World Records, the Rainforest Foundation's Annual Benefit Concerts have raised more than $9 million dollars since 1990 making it the biggest enviornmental benefit.According to Event Associates who have worked all ten benefits, 85 per cent of all ticket sales are people returning to the show from previous the years.
This year's show is expected to raise more than $2.5 million dollars.The Rainforest Foundation now supports projects in 19 rainforest countries worldwide. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
