  • Story Text: Jazz greats gathered in South Africa's capital of cool at the weekend as the famed North Sea Jazz Festival opened outside the Netherlands for the first time in its 25-year history.
    Jazz greats gathered in South Africa's capital of cool, Cape Town, at the weekend as the famed North Sea Jazz Festival opened outside the Netherlands for the first time in its 25-year history.American Headline acts such as Herbie Hancock, Ronny Jordan, Abbey Lincoln as well as Brazilian sensation, Tania Maria drew in the crowds by the thousands, leaving them begging for more throughout the three day event.
    I've been waiting to come to South Africa for quite sometime, certainly since the end of apartheid, said Jazz great, Herbie Hancock adding, I just wish we had more time here so I could get a chance to sight see and listen to the music thats being produced here, interact more with the people.
    The festival is world-renowned for the many musical genres, which it offers each year, ranging from traditional New Orleans Jazz, to swing, fusion, jazz rock and jazz dance.
    The event, modelled on its Dutch cousin, is not the first attempt at a jazz festival in Cape Town.There have been at least three others that never got off the drawing board.
    Organisers said more then eight-thousand people turned up on the first day of the festival- about the same number that went to the first North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague in 1975.
