- Story Text: Count Dracula is back.Featuring ex The Who star Roger Daltrey and Rudolf Martin as Vlad the Impaler, this new epic about the 15th century Romanian prince is a historical thriller claiming to tell the true story behind the Dracula myth.
"Vlad the Impaler", shot in Romania and funded by U.S.
producers tells the story of Prince Vlad of Romania, - a 15th century knight who is said to have killed tens of thousands of people while battling against the Turks 500 years ago.
The prince was known as The Impaler because of his "trademark" of driving sticks through his enemies, impaling them on poles. He was a knight of the order of the Dragon, hence the Dracula nickname.
Rudolf Martin who stars as the Impaler says "In the fifteenth century as a ruler of any country in Europe, it was quite normal to kill a few thousand people a month maybe. What was unusual about Vlad the Impaler was the method he used - putting people on stakes to such an extent to impale people.A lot of people say he really enjoyed it a little too much."
His costar Roger Daltrey who plays the role of Janos, King of Hungary says "Well, I've literally started today doing scenes with Rudolf and I think he's tremendous casting for this part. He's got an aura, very very special. He's got this warmth about him.But he can also have this coldness. It's a very rare quality.I think he'll be an extremely good Dracula, extremely good."
Vlad is a hero to many Romanians, but his cruelty inspired Irish novelist Bram Stoker to create the legendary vampire Count Dracula.
The movie features an international cast with Jane March, Peter Weller, and a group of Hungarian and Romanian stuntsmen.
About working with ex The Who star Roger Daltrey, Rudolf Martin says "I have a feeling he's going to steal the movie - from me, from Jane (March) and from Peter Weller.Without his (the King of Hungary's) support, Dracula would not have become a prince.Hungary controlled Transylvania at the time.King Janos is a great character, he puts Dracula in prison for eight years towards the end of his reign and then gives him money and troops to reclaim his throne in Romania and fight the Turks. He was kind of a politician and Dracula was Dracula. He was not much of a politician. He had so much, a little too much passion in him.
During filming Daltrey was also given a trailer which used to belong to Romania's late Stalinist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
"Vlad the Impaler" was directed by Joe Chappelle and is due to be released this autumn. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
