- Story Text: The first of the twenty three films in line for the prestigious Palme D'or has had its official screening at the 53rd International Film Festival at last. The stars of "Bread and Roses" hit the red carpet with director Ken Loach. A touch of Hollywood glamour followed with the screening of "Under Suspicion" starring Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman.
"Bread & Roses" tells the tale of a group at illegal Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles who work as night time office cleaners for paltry wages. In a typically gritty Ken Loach film, they join forces to form a union and hang on to their jobs. Many of the actors were nonprofessional, and the female lead, Maya, is played by Pilar Padilla who had no acting experience at all, but was spotted in the street by Loach and singled out to star in his film.
More experienced movie actors were also in town for the screening, of "Under Suspicion" which is being shown out of competition. Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman star in this tense drama set in Porto Rico, Hackman plays a lawyer being pursued by Freeman who suspects that his whiter than white reputation may not be all it seems, and tries to pin the rape and murder of three little girls woman on him.
Before the screening Hackman and Freeman took time to relax at a cocktail party which was one of their few chances to see something of the glamorous side of Cannes.
"Under Suspicion" is based on a French film "Garde a Vue" and Hackman wanted to make a version of it ever since he saw the film almost twenty years ago, it impressed him so much he decided to produce it himself, his first such venture. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
