- Story Text: The undisputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson managed to woo fans and celebrities alike when he performed at the 12th Annual World Music Awards in Monaco.Having been mobbed by fans and the press outside his hotel on Tuesday (May 9), Jackson modestly accepted his award for Best Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium at the ceremony.
With the glamourous backdrop of Monte Carlo's marina, the 12th Annual World Music Awards were celebrated under the patronage of H.S.H Prince Albert of Monaco on Wednesday (May 10) held at the principality's renowned Sporting Club.
The 2000 awards were hosted by former model Elle MacPherson and Mark McGrath and featured a selection of the best-selling artists from across the globe as well as special guest presenters including Ursula Andress, former supreme Mary Wilson, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Billy Zane and Geena Lee Nolan.
Most fans and artists however, were waiting to catch a glimpse of their favourite pop star, Michael Jackson who was staying in Monaco at the Hotel du Paris with his two children.
Jackson was in town to collect his Best Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium award and to perform at the awards ceremony.
Mariah Carey flew in at the last minute to pick up her award for Best Selling Pop Female Artist of the Millennium before singing for the audience.The Latin American favourite on the night was the Puerto Rican-born singer, the sensational Ricky Martin, who scooped the award for World's Best Selling Pop Male Artist and Best Selling Latin Artist having sold over 15 million albums worldwide in 1999.
Martin flew to Monaco directly from Milan in Italy, where he'd performed twice earlier this week.
Two of the Backstreet Boys made a stopover in Monte Carlo to pick up their award for World's Best Selling Pop, Dance, R&B and American Group.The boys are in Europe to go back to the recording studio in the next few days.
Everyone's favourite teen-queens avoided disappointment by collecting an award each on the night.Neither Britney Spears nor Christina Auguilera were able to attend the event but Spears sent a personal message of thanks.Spears picked up an award for World Best Selling Pop Female Artist while Aguilera won the gong for Best Selling New-Female Artist.
German-born artist Lou Bega won the category for Best Selling German and New Male Artist while Femi Kuti, the highly flamboyant and energetic Nigerian musician won the award for Best Selling African Artist.Australian singer Tina Arena, won World Best Selling Australian Recording Artist.
