- Story Text: Separated by 30 years yet linked by a mysterious short wave radio, a father and son come together to solve a series of brutal killings in the new science fiction thriller "Frequency." The film's stars Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel attended its World Premiere in New York on Wednesday, April
In the film, Quaid plays a heroic firefighter who dies tragically in a horrible warehouse fire in 1969, leaving behind a widow and a young son.
Thirty years later, that son has grown up to become a New York City cop who has never really been able to get over the loss of his father at such an early age."Thin Red Line" star Jim Caviezel plays the son, John Sullivan.
When John accidentally discovers his father's old short wave radio in a closet, he drags it out and starts playing around with it, only to be met with what seems to be the voice of his long-dead father, Frank Sullivan.
Disbelieving at first, John is soon carrying on an all-night conversation with his young father who is still living in 1969, sharing for the first time his love and regret over his dad's future death.
Yet John now realizes that he might be able to change all that by alerting Frank to the mistake that cost him his life the first time around.Frank lives through the fire, only to realize that, together, he and his son have changed the course of history and set in motion a series of events that will result in the brutal murder of John's mother and 12 other innocent women.
Separated by 30 years, but united in their mission to spare their loved one an untimely death, the father and son team up to catch a brutal serial killer.
Given the unusual nature of the conversations between father and son, director Gregory Hoblit chose to shoot the scenes in an unorthodox manner. He constructed two side by side sets, one based in 1969, the other in 1999.He then had the actors deliver their lines to each other through a radio in real time, so they could react to each other's voices and emotions.
Hoblit calls this technique a "hopeful experiment" which turned out better then he could have possibly imagined.
The storyline also had personal meaning to both actors.
Quaid is the father of a 6-year old son and continues to have what he refers to as conversations with his deceased father, while Caviezel recently guided his father through life-threatening open heart surgery. Both actors used these experiences to inform their performances.
Quaid also prepared for the film by hanging out with New York City firefighters and even insisted on jumping into the flames to do many of his own fire-fighting stunts. He calls the firefighters he spent time with "true heroes."
Although typically fraught with plausibility pitfalls, Hoblit gladly took on the challenge of directing a time travel film as the follow-up to his hit "Primal Fear" with Richard Gere.In order to avoid those pitfalls, he relied on the technical advice of Columbia University professor Brian Greene, a leading theoretical physicist known for his revolutionary ideas on time, space, and temporal divergences.
As a result, "Frequency" contains sci-fi ideas that are more based on science than fiction.
"Frequency" opens in theaters throughout the United States on Friday, April 28. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
