- Story Text: Dozens of actors and filmmakers were on hand in Beverly Hills for the pre-Oscars nominees luncheon, an event as notable for its casual air as the actual Oscar night is for its studied formality.
The annual ritual, hosted by the motion picture Academy, is a laid back affair where stars can let their hair down before the stress of the big night.Outwardly at least, the handful of nominees who spoke with the international media before sitting down to lunch seemed to have few cares.
Among the men, the dress ranged from the suits and ties that Kevin Spacey and Denzel Washington wore, to the jeans and black leather trenchcoat favored by gum-chewing Russell Crowe.
Spacey, who on Sunday (March 12) evening took top acting honors from the Screen Actors Guild for his work in "American Beauty," spoke about being "free enough to do the best work that (he) can."
"I focus on the process...on the work, and coming to a place and hopefully working with people (I) can trust," said Spacey.
Swedish-born director Lasse Hallstrom was among those attending today.
Russell Crowe spoke about how "The Insider" "uncovers some very negative aspects of corporate behavior, but at the same time shows the true core of the American spirit." Crowe, whose U.S.breakthrough came opposite Spacey and others as the no-nonsense detective in "L.A.Confidential," continued that "great things can be achieved for the common good by people with the will and the energy."
The youngest nominee, 11-year-old Haley Joel Osment of "The Sixth Sense," displayed more of the grace and poise that has astonished some people since his nomination. But he also said he has not seen the competing films in his best supporting actor category "because they're R-rated and I'm not allowed in." He also spoke about being nominated in the same category with people like Michael Clarke Duncan (`The Green Mile'), Tom Cruise (`Magnolia'), Michael Caine (`Cider House') and Jude Law (`The Talented Mr.Ripley').
Other nominees in attendance included Cruise, best actress nominees Julianne Moore and Hilary Swank, and Sam Mendes, the British-born director of "American Beauty," also attended the event."American Beauty" co-star Annette Bening, also a best actress nominee, was there with her husband, Warren Beatty, who will receive the Irving G.Thalberg Memorial Award at the March 26 Oscar ceremony. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
